I have bought fat-free cheese and fat-free ranch dressing - what's that titanium dioxide they put in for color?

It's a mineral. Just like copper, zinc and calcium are minerals. Titanium dioxide is in a ton of products and is generally recognized as safe. At best it is inert, it doesn't react to acids or other oxidizing agents so it is pretty much benign.
