Is it just me, or does the media tend to exaggerate and downplay the beauty of different body types?

You have a valid point. The truth of the matter is, though, that each of us is unique and are attracted to different qualities or attributes and variations of those attributes. While I may be very attracted to tall, skinny guys, others are attracted to muscle-y guys, and some even prefer chubby guys. Gives us all a good chance of finding someone who will be attracted to our own unique qualities. :)
