The most obvious difference between this species of dik-dik and other kinds, is the unusual length of the snout. It almost looks like a trunk. This "proboscis," as it is sometimes called, is an adaptation to help the dik-dik cool itself. As air pes through the long nose, it is cooled by evaporation from the moist mucous membrane lining the nasal pages. This works both during normal breathing, and even more when the animal is panting through its nose, when it is very hot.
