Did God Create Humans Or Did Humans Create God?

A friend and I were having a conversation and she was telling me about how ancient civilizations believed in many gods for different things. i.e. Romans believed in a God of War, Egyptians believed in a God of Life, Aztecs believed in a Goddess of Fertility. which over time developed into theology (a belief in one God for everything). Anyway, she was trying to make the point that humans created God, Gods, and Goddesses, A Higher Power. Im kind of on the fence with what she said but it does make some sense, Im asking is the present belief system we have as ignorant as those of previous civilizations?
