How to write simple molecular formulas...?

I am a Chemistry teacher--so forgive me if this is a really simple answer... I am teaching my students about covalent compounds and it occured to me that I don't know the reason we write HCl vs ClH, and H2O vs OH2, but we write CH4, not H4C and NH3 not H3N. Is that just convention or is there a reason?
